Effluent Disposal and Reuse Planning Guidance Case Study Report for Barnstable, MA.
Stearns & Wheler-GHD Inc., February 2005
This document has been prepared to assist communities in coastal Massachusetts (Cape Cod) and other coastal communities to identify land-based, treated-water recharge technologies that are protective of the environment and cost effective.
In seeking locations for land recharge, communities must consider the following:
• Is there sufficient land available?
• Will the soil and groundwater conditions at the available land be suitable?
• Are there sensitive ecological systems in the vicinity of the available land that could be impacted?
• What recharge technology is the most appropriate?
This document presents a general procedure for identifying and characterizing candidate sites and selecting appropriate recharge technologies. This document also provides a Case Study of the process the Town of Barnstable, Massachusetts employed during their Comprehensive Wastewater Management Planning (CWMP) project to identify candidate sites.
