This document was prepared for the Town of Orleans through a grant from the Cape Cod Water Protection Collaborative (CCWPC), under its "Shared Watersheds, Shared Responsibilities" program by Wright Pierce to to determine if regional wastewater facilities make sense. The intent is to complete this evaluation while the draft CWMP is undergoing environmental review and then incorporate its findings in the final CWMP in early 2010. Read More
3) Solving Wastewater Management Challenges for Non-Point Source Nitrogen Control in Coastal Watersheds, September 2009
The is the final report of activities undertaken by the Cape Cod Commission relative to a US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) grant from August 2005 to September 2009. The goal of this project was to develop technical assistance materials to educate and assist communities to establish and implement new regulatory, planning, and wastewater management strategies for non-point source nitrogen control. 4) Groundwater Modeling to Support Comprehensive Wastewater Management Planning Guidance Document and Case Study Report, June 2009
This document has been prepared for the Towns of Falmouth and Mashpee by Stearns & Wheler-GHD Inc. and Watershed Hydrogerlogic Inc. to assist these towns (and other Cape Cod communities with similar wastewater and nutrient management problems) on the best ways to utilize groundwater modeling and evaluate wastewater nitrogen management alternatives to meet nitrogen Total Maximum Daily Loads (TMDLs). The procedures presented in this document can be an integral part of wastewater management planning efforts, and are typically used as the basis for recommended Comprehensive Wastewater Management Plans (CWMP) and Environmental Impact Reports. The same procedures can be used to evaluate phosphorus management alternatives for the watersheds of freshwater lakes and ponds....Read More
5) Sewers and Smart Growth: Challenges, Opportunities and Strategies, March 2009
Sewers and Smart Growth project to explore the possible growth management challenges and opportunities that could arise when a community installs wastewater infrastructure, and to provide a set of tools each community can consider when anticipating or seeking to address potential growth management challenges and opportunities...Read More
6) Resource Assessment to Evaluate Ecological & Hydrodynamic Responses to Reinstalling a Water Control Structure in the Muddy Creek Dike, December 2008
This report was prepared by University of Massachusetts Dartmouth School for Marine Science and Technology and Applied Coastal Research & Engineering under the Collaborative's Shared Watersheds, Shared Responsibilities grant program. The purpose was to assess the wetland and habitat resource impacts associated with reinstallation of a dike in Muddy Creek. The dike would restore the upper Creek to a freshwater system for the purposes of natural nitrogen attenuation in a heavily overloaded subembayment of Pleasant Bay. The resource impacts were balanced against nitrogen attenuation and associated habitat restoration impacts to determine the overall feasibility of re-installation, in concert with other nitrogen management strategies under consideration by the towns...Read More
7) Use of Numerical Models to Simulate Transport of Sewage-Derived Nitrate in a Coastal Aquifer, Central and Western Cape Cod, Massachusetts: U.S. Geological Survey Scientific Investigations Report 2007–5259, 2008
This was a 2-year investigation by Don Walters to assist local and regional planners in the evaluation of potential wastewater scenarios using numerical solute transport models, to use results and interpretation from the analyses to develop hydrologic concepts transferable throughout the region, and to establish and test methods that would be of use in future evaluations..Read More8) Three Case Studies of Towns Sharing a Coastal Watershed, November 2008
In 2003, MassDEP received a multi-year grant from EPA to develop guidance for MEP communities on technical and institutional nitrogen reduction strategies. A roadmap for changes in state policy and regulation to support innovative nitrogen reduction strategies that would include watershed-based permitting and nutrient trading was also to be developed as part of this grant.
Three pilot estuaries that represented a wide range of conditions were targeted for assistance through this grant: Popponesset Bay (Mashpee, Barnstable, and Sandwich), Three Bays (also Mashpee, Barnstable, and Sandwich), and Pleasant Bay (Chatham, Harwich, Orleans, and Brewster). The final report was submitted to EPA and published in November 2008. Read More
9) Guidance Document and Case Study Report for Great Sand Lakes (in Harwich MA) Evaluation for Wastewater Management for Freshwater Ponds, June 2007
This report, prepared for the Town of Harwich by Stearns &Wheler-GHD Inc. and EcoLogic LLC, through a grant from Barnstable County, evaluates wastewater management options for the Great Sand Lakes and their watersheds as well as the watersheds to several Town water-supply wells down-gradient of the lakes...Read More
10) Projected use of Innovative/Alternative On-site Sewage Treatment Systems in Eastham Under Current Regulations and Policies. May 2007
This comprehensive evaluation prepared by Susan S. Rask, Barnstable County Department of Health and the Environment, provides projections of the extent and costs of onsite alternative septic systems that will ensue under existing policies. This report is meant to facilitate comparison with other feasible options for wastewater treatment or installation of a municipal public water supply that the town may investigate....Read More
11) Sewer Modeling and Preliminary Design Evaluations Guidance Document and Case Study Report to Address Nitrogen TMDLs at Popponesset Bay and Mashpee, MA. November 2005
This document, by Stearns & Wheler-GHD Inc., has been prepared to assist communities in Cape Cod, coastal Massachusetts, and other coastal communities with similar wastewater management concerns to identify and evaluate wastewater collection systems (sewers) that are cost effective and protective of the environment. The procedures presented in this document can be an integral part of wastewater management planning efforts on Cape Cod and elsewhere, and are typically used as the basis for preliminary and detailed design...Read More12) Tri-Town Septage Treatment Facility Evaluation, August 2005
Prepared by Wright-Pierce under the direction of the Orleans Wastewater Management Steering Committee, the goals of this evaluation are to identify the upgrading needs of the existing septage treatment facilities, establish a capital budget for improvements, and to determine if the Tri-Town site may be suitable to satisfy some or all of the future needs of the Town of Orleans for wastewater treatment, wastewater disposal, or both...
